Disability Insurance
Protect Your Income.
Protect Your Future.
Your ability to earn an income is one of your most valuable financial assets.
An extended illness or injury can disrupt even the best financial plan. If you’re temporarily or permanently unable to work, disability insurance can provide a monthly benefit to help cover essential expenses such as your mortgage, utilities, groceries, and other everyday costs.
The goal is simple: help you maintain financial stability while you focus on recovery.
Why Disability Insurance Matters
Your bills don’t stop when your income does.
Without adequate disability coverage, a prolonged illness or injury could force you to rely on emergency savings, borrow money, or withdraw from long-term investments earlier than planned.
Disability insurance is designed to replace a portion of your income when an eligible disability prevents you from working.
It can help you continue covering:
- Mortgage or rent payments
- Utilities and household expenses
- Groceries and daily living costs
- Loan and debt payments
- Family expenses
- Long-term financial commitments
How Disability Insurance Works
Benefit Amount
This is the monthly amount your policy may pay during an eligible disability.
The amount of coverage available is generally based on your income at the time the policy is approved.
Waiting Period
Also called the elimination period, this is the amount of time you must remain disabled before benefits begin.
Common waiting periods may include 30, 60 or 90 days.
A longer waiting period can often reduce the cost of coverage, while a shorter period can provide benefits sooner.
Benefit Period
The benefit period determines how long eligible monthly payments can continue.
Depending on the policy, coverage may continue for:
- 2 years
- 5 years
- Until age 65
Definition of Disability
One of the most important parts of any policy is how it defines being “disabled.”
Own Occupation
May provide benefits if you are unable to perform the duties of your specific profession, even if you are able to work in another role.
Any Occupation
Generally requires that you be unable to perform the duties of any occupation for which you are reasonably suited based on your education, training, or experience.

Optional Disability Insurance Riders
Depending on your needs, additional policy features may be available to provide greater flexibility or protection.
Cost of Living Adjustment
A Cost of Living Adjustment, or COLA, can increase benefit payments during a long-term claim to help account for inflation.
Future Insurability Option
A Future Insurability Option (FIO) may allow you to increase your coverage as your income grows without completing full medical underwriting again, subject to the terms of the policy.
Partial or Residual Disability
This feature may provide a proportional benefit if an illness or injury reduces your ability to work or lowers your income without preventing you from working entirely.
Do You Already Have Disability Coverage Through Work?
Employer-provided disability insurance can be valuable, but it may not provide as much protection as you expect.
Group plans may:
- Cap the amount of income they replace
- Exclude or limit bonuses and commissions
- Provide less coverage for higher earners
- End when you leave your employer
An individual disability insurance policy can help supplement workplace coverage and may remain with you even if you change jobs.
Disability Insurance for Business Owners & the Self-Employed
If you’re self-employed, a business owner, or an independent professional, protecting your income can be especially important.
Unlike many employees, you may not have access to employer-sponsored disability benefits.
Personal disability insurance can help replace lost income during an eligible disability, while separate business-related coverage may also help address ongoing business expenses.
Protect the Savings You've Worked Hard to Build
A prolonged period without income can quickly affect more than your monthly budget.
Without adequate income protection, you may be forced to:
- Draw down emergency savings
- Withdraw from RRSP or TFSA accounts
- Take on additional debt
- Borrow against real estate or other assets
- Delay long-term financial goals
Disability insurance can help provide ongoing cash flow during recovery so your long-term savings have a better chance of staying intact.
Is Your Current Disability Coverage Enough?
Having disability insurance is a great start — but the details of the policy matter.
Your current coverage may not fully account for your income, occupation, commissions, self-employment income, or long-term financial obligations.
A policy review can help you understand:
- How much monthly income your policy could replace
- How long you would wait before benefits begin
- How long benefits could continue
- How your policy defines disability
- Whether your workplace coverage leaves any gaps
- Whether additional features may be appropriate for your situation
